Midnapore Municipality was constituted in the year 1865.

Demographics

       As of 2011 India census, Midnapore had a population of 169127. Midnapore  has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 71%. In Midnapore , 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

     This makes it the second largest town in Paschim Midnapore district after Kharagpur. The town is almost equally divided in terms of population between Hindus  & Muslims. A witness to the diversity of faith is multiple mosques and temples, many predating British rule. It is an important religious spot for the Muslims of India and Bangladesh.

Governance

          Midnapore is a Municipality with 25 wards Midnapore elects one person to the West Bengal Vidhan Sabha and one representative to the Lok Sabha of the Parliament of India.

BASIC FEATURE:-

  • The town Midnapore stretches over an area of 18.65 Sq. Km. It is bounded by Abhas in north ,river Cossey in the south, pilgrim road (since converted to N.H. No 60) in the east and Rangamati in the west. It is linked by road & rialto Kolkata situated about 135 Kms to the north east.
  • The area is generally   flat with mild slops towards the eastern and southern fringes. The major drainage system consist of (i)Dwaribandh Khal (ii)cossey river and (iii) Some erstwhile agril. Land. The coverage  town area drains which are so designed as to cater to both sullage and storm water discharged. There is a proposal for realignment of the drains in the eastern portion of the town by extending the branch drains towards the east. The infrastructure mainly includes the construction of new drain parallel to the alignment of the National Highway which would discharge into the cossey river.
  • The water supply system in the town was originally initiated in the year 1924 with a population force of 10000.Since then the supply of water was being augmented through installation of river tube-wells, deep tube wells, clear water reservoir, booster pumping station over head tanks associated with distribution networks in stages during 1969-70, 1984 and 1995.In addition deep tube wells were feeding directly into the distribution mains. The distribution system of pipe water supply is arranged through five separate zones covering thereby about 90% of the town.Suplementary drinking water is supplied through nos deep tube wells which are owned by the Municipality. Local institution like hospital housing complex, railways etc. have their own supply systems.
  • A massive development took place on the roadside in the Municipality area. .
  • The central bus stand is situated in the heart of town is owned and managed by municipality. The bus stand serve as the parking place and terminal point of buses for within and inter district purpose.
  • Municipality has constructed various stall of Market Complex to rehabilitees the Hawkers of bus stands and others.
  • In the health services, besides the Govt. facilities the Municipality dispensary clinic offers one charitable Dispensary with facilities of immunization of children and expecting mothers. The clinic also helps anti natal check up in the hospital.
