Midnapur Municipality was constituted in the year 1865.

As of 2011 India census, Medinipur had a population of 169127. Medinipur has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 71%. In Medinipur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
The town Midnapore stretches over an area of 18.65 Sq. Km.The area is generally flat with mild slops towards the eastern and southern fringes. The major drainage system consist of (i)Dwaribandh Khal (ii)cossey river and (iii) Some erstwhile agril. Land. The coverage town area drains which are so designed as to cater to both sullage and storm water discharged. There is a proposal for realignment of the drains in the eastern portion of the town by extending the branch drains towards the east. The infrastructure mainly includes the construction of new drain parallel to the alignment of the National Highway which would discharge into the cossey river
